How we can help

The British Embassy in La Paz provides Consular, Passport and Visa Services.

Consular services:  we can provide consular assistance, in line with the Consular Guidance, for British nationals in distress.  Our Honorary Consul in Santa Cruz de la Sierra can also provide assistance. We also provide services for registration of births and deaths, legalisation of documents, certifying translations and witnessing signatures (for further details see Living in Bolivia).

We also encourage British residents and long-term visitors to register with us, in case of emergency.  You should register on-line at Registering with us

Passport services:  we can provide Temporary Passports, valid for one year, to replace lost or stolen passports.  They normally take 3 working days.  We accept applications for full 10 year Biometric Passports; these are then sent to Rio de Janeiro by courier, and take up to 40 working days.  We do not issue Emergency Passports.  For further details see Passports.

Visa services:  we accept applications from visa nationals and Bolivian nationals wanting to visit the UK.  Since May 2009, all Bolivian nationals wishing to visit the United Kingdom, even in transit, need to be in possession of a valid visa.  Applications must be made, and paid for, on-line, but applicants for visas to the UK must attend the British Embassy in La Paz in person to give their biometric details (photographs and fingerprints).

We also accept applications for visas to some Commonwealth countries.

For further details, and the documentation necessary to apply for a visa go to Visas

Commercial services:  there is no UK Trade and Investment office in La Paz.  We are therefore not able to deal with commercial enquiries, except in the most general terms.  There is commercial information on the Bolivia page of the UKTI website.

Cultural services:  there is no British Council office in Bolivia, and we do not provide any cultural services.

Scholarships:  we have a small number of scholarships advertised each year on the Spanish website
